ABSTRACT
Migration is as old as human history. Many of the social scientists were discussed its manifold effects. Recently, political dimension of the migration attained special significance. Several migratory movements can be found in the world. South Asia also witnessed population movements. Migration in India from one state to another is also taking place. Migration in Andhra Pradesh is also found. Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh, South India has a special significance in sending its people to various parts both within and outside the country. Most of these migrants are maintaining their attachment through remittances and investing at the place of their origin. This has a tremendous effect on the local level power structure. Works of Gerard Heuze (1996) Jan Breman (1985&1996) Marguerite S. Robinson (1988) Myron Wiener (1981) and Connel J et.al (1976) have been reviewed for the resent study. Besides primary and secondary sources several narratives have been built up to extract the situation in the area. Three distinct villages viz., Bandapally, Julapally and Bethigal were selected for the study.
Prominent reasons for migration in the district are vanishing away of the traditional occupations, small land holding, lack of irrigation facilities, change in the agrarian practice and fear of violence. Most of the migrants are down trodden sections and school dropouts. Migration has an effect on land transfers. Most of the migrants are interested in purchasing agricultural lands in their place of origin. Shift in ownership of lands also resulted enhancing their social status. Since rural powerstructure is based on the ownership of the lands, this change created a new turn in the local politics of Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh. Reservations in the local body elections, political consciousness among the migrants prompted them to enter into the local level political positions and some of them have already became Surpanches, Mandal Presidents and even in the district level positions.
