Jammikunta is an old town dated back to 10th century.  Historical evidences show that Ahomallapa Deva, popularly known as Thailapa Deva-II belong to the dynasty of Kalyana Chalukyas.  Thailapa Deva-II constructed a temple of lord Shiva along with an Aditya Deepa Vriksha at Dhammikunta, after the victory over Munjaraju belong to Paramara dynasty of Malava. This construction was completed and inaugurated on 5th April 995 AD. Gouda Nagaiah of the village appointed to light the lamp at the Deepa Vriksha.  There is a Jyothirlingam in the temple, but the successive rulers neglected it and hence it was not included in the Dwadasa Jyothirlingas. Dhammikunta is derived from the words of Dhammi means lotus and Kunta means pond.  Therefore, Dhammikunta means pond with lotus flowers. Over a period of time this was pronounced and known as Jammikunta. It is only after the laid down of railway track at present Jammikunta, the modern town came into existence.  Still the old Jammikunta people call the new Jammikunta as mere "Station" which represents the railway station. Ellandakunta is famous for the temple of lord Rama, popularly known as "Apara Bhadradri".  There is a splendid festival takes place on every Sri Rama Navami.  It is situated at a distance of 3 kms from Jammikunta.

Now Jammikunta is a town and Mandal in Karimnagar District in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a small town with a population more than 50,000 and it is a centre for trade and education for around 60 surrounding villages. Jammikunta is well connected with rail and road. Primary occupation of people comprises of Agriculture and Business. Economy is mainly dependent on Agriculture and trade between farmers from the surrounding villages and the Enterprises running Oil, Rice and Cotton mills, Dairy Farm, Leather Factory, Weavers Societies, FCI, Seed Factories, Ladies Hand Made Works, Mineral Water Plants, is the major constituent to the economy. It's hailed as the second largest market yard after Warangal in the whole Northern Telangana districts. Jammikunta is growing in stature as one of the major educational centers in the Karimnagar district.

::  Gandhi chowk, Jammikunta   ::

Jammikunta city has four main roads. The junction of these four roads is known as Gandhi Chowk. It has circular area with green grass, and at the center the statue of Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi who renowned as Mahatma Gandhi is located on its pedestal. The lateral surface of the pedestal is circular at lower and rectangular at upper. The four rectangular surfaces of the pedestal reveal the details about the donors of the statue, foundation stone, inauguration, and few words about Gandhi.

The lateral surface of the pedestal, which is in the East, has the following information. Jai Hind, Encouraged by N. Veeraswamy Naidu, Deputy Civil Administrator, Huzurabad, & Names of donors

The following words are engraved on the rectangular lateral surface of the pedestal in the West.
"Pedestal is donated by S.Baliah, Contractor, Hyderabad.

Eeshwar Alla tere nam - Sab ko sammati de bhagawan
Mandir Masjid tere dham - Sab ko janma diya bhagawan

Mahathmudithadu, Bharathamba suthudu
Mahatma Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi
Birth: 02-10-1869, Death: 30-01-1948"

The South lateral surface of the pedestal shows that A. Satyanarayana, Civil Administrator of Karimnagar District laid foundation stone on 03-11-1949.

The North lateral surface of the pedestal contains that M.K.Vellodi, C.I.E; I.C.S Prime Minister of Hyderabad Government inaugurated the statue on 05-02-1950.

The statue of Gandhi is white in colour. The statue depicts Gandhi is old, he has a book in his hand, he wear spectacles and leather chappals, he is moving towards West. The Statue attracts the people with its originality and it is a rare among the Gandhi statues.
